DO RATS LEAVE THE ATTIC DURING THE DAY?

Whenever rats live in attics they create dangerous environments for both the inhabitants of a house and the house itself. While we might think that rats are ground-dwellers, many are actually skilled climbers and can easily find their way into roofs or attics. Rats in the attic, and the bugs they bring with them, are potentially very dangerous to a person or pet’s health, and can also cause structural or material damage to your home.

Roof rats are one of the two most popular species of rats in the United States. As their name suggests, they like high places around your property like the attic but can also invade your home. Also known as black rats (even though they vary in color), roof rats are rodents that explore both indoors and outside and can be found on roofs, in attics, rafters, the tops of trees, and other high places around your home. These rats are omnivores, eating foliage like seeds, leaves, and stems in addition to small prey like birds and insects. They will also eat crops if they have access to them. Roof rats eat about 15 grams of food per day and drink 15 milliliters of water per day. They weigh between 2-8 ounces and their bodies are 5 to 7.5 inches long. Their tail will be equally as long.

Rats don't leave the attic during the day, but they sleep in there all day. Then at dusk they wake up, and start moving around, and that's why you hear them after dark. Rats leave the attic during the night, to go out and forage for water and food. Then they return to the attic. They usually don't leave the attic for very long. A rat does not want to be exposed to danger outside for very long. If you think you can just seal shut the entry holes into the house during the daylight when they are outside, that is incorrect. Timing a sealup for rats is impossible, because they leave for short periods, and they don't all leave at the same time of night.

EVIDENCE OF THE PRESENCE OF RATS IN THE ATTIC

The best way to notice signs of a rodent infestation is to monitor your attic regularly and get used to listening for the sounds of rats in your attic. When you know what to look for, you’ll be more likely to spot the signs of a rodent infestation before the infestation becomes too serious. Get into the habit of going up to your attic at least once a month and checking for holes, droppings, shredded papers and fabrics and other signs of a rodent infestation. That way, you’ll be able to catch a problem before it becomes a full-blown infestation.

HOW RATS GAIN ENTRANCE

Rats can climb any surface, they can get wherever they want to go. They can squeeze through amazingly small holes and gaps. They can get in through the sewer pipes or any possible gap or hole in a home, from the foundation to the tip of the roof. They can also chew. If a rat detects just a small breeze coming from inside, they will get into.
